Who doesn't know photography? For the viewer, photography is nothing more than making works of art where taking pictures uses documentation tools (cameras). Of course, you need the right location and timing and variety to produce the image you want. Therefore, one of the campuses in Surabaya is holding learning that is slightly different from before. After holding practical activities for the Applicative Photography course at the Surabaya Zoo (KBS) on March 28 2024, the Visual Communication Design department class 23 again held learning outside the campus of the Surabaya Integrated Science and Technology Institute (ISTTS). Using previously learned techniques, a total of 32 participating students immediately went into the field to implement their knowledge. This time the location is at one of the tourist attractions which is quite popular among the people of Surabaya. The name of the place is none other than Kenjeran Lama Beach. This activity was carried out on April 18 2024 to coincide with the time this news was written.
The departure time is scheduled as the previous departure time. Precisely before 7.30 WIB, the students had gathered at the starting point before leaving. The mechanism is more or less the same as before, namely divided into two groups. Some went by private vehicle and the rest went by campus car, so there were around 14 people taking part in the trip. When the clock showed the planned time, the car started to warm up the engine and then rushed to leave campus. If measured from the starting point to the destination, the distance that must be covered is 8.4 km. So, the travel time to Kenjeran Lama Beach takes around 20 minutes.
When we arrived there, we saw several students using private vehicles who had arrived at the location. While waiting for all the students to arrive, some took this opportunity to immortalize the moment with their friends. Before starting the activity, a group photo session was held as usual. After that, just line up and enter the place. When you set foot, the wind gently blows the shady trees and welcomes anyone who comes to visit. The beach view looks cool to those who see it. Don't forget the sound of the waves crashing on the edge and the sand in every footprint left behind.
Regarding the opportunity to visit here, this group of students looked very enthusiastic and excited. Not wanting to wait too long, the students then split up with the others to hunt for photos armed with the equipment they brought such as cameras or gadget cameras. Throughout the exploration, there are many spots that can be used as material for photography. At that time, you could say that the hot sun was piercing your skin and the temperature was quite irritating. However, that doesn't make photo seekers discouraged from capturing the moment that is happening.
Starting from the starting point, there are several boats lined up on the edge of the beach. If you want to explore more of the sea side of Kenjeran Beach, whether to look further at the surrounding sea or take a closer look at the marine life, the gentlemen who own the boats also offer their services to local visitors to board their boats. Then, walking a little further, visitors can cross the bridge that crosses the sea. At that point, the view of the sea along with the reflection from the sun appears at the end of the place.
Mr. Herman Budianto, as the lecturer in the Applicative Photography course, also provided educational directions and tips to his students to get good and interesting photos. Whether it's the composition or the right camera settings for landscape photography. It doesn't feel like time is always running out, the beach location is slowly starting to be filled with new visitors. The more people there are, the more interactions there will be. Like transacting with sellers and enjoying the beach environment. Seeing this, students also took this moment to take photos. This photography is included in the Human Interest category. Just before the departure time at 10.30 WIB, the students who accompanied the campus vehicles gathered at the starting point before finally returning to campus. The photos are then collected into a Google Drive link before being discussed together at the next meeting.
Reflecting on previous activities, these different locations have become a means for students to channel their interests and knowledge that they have learned in lectures. So, students also learn new things about the world of photography. While exchanging ideas with others, new views can open up as well. By participating in activities like this, students are expected to be able to improve their photography skills.
