Critical Eleven, Critical Period of Aircraft Accidents

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia - Three minutes after takeoff and eight minutes before landing, known as the Plus Three Minus Eight or critical eleven, are critical moments in an airplane flight. At that moment, the Sriwijaya Air SJ 182 aircraft reportedly lost contact on Saturday (9/1).

SJ 182, which was scheduled to go to Pontianak, West Kalimantan, was found to have lost contact a few minutes after taking off from Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Cengkareng.

The Ministry of Transportation explained that SJ 182 took off at 14:36 ??WIB, then at 14:37 the plane was allowed to rise to an altitude of 29 thousand feet. The plane then lost contact at 14:40 WIB.

SJ 182 was declared to have fallen in the waters of the Thousand Islands, between Lancang Island and Male Island. This flight carried 62 people, 50 of them passengers and 12 crew.

Until now, the SAR team is still searching for aircraft debris and victims of the incident. The black box signal has been found and marked, the discovery of this device can unravel the mystery of the cause of the SJ 182 downfall.

According to Art of Manliness, based on accident investigations around the world, almost 80 percent of airplane accidents occur during the Plus Three Minus Eight moment. Outside that period, the potential for accidents is said to have dropped dramatically.

Launching ABC News, the author of the book 'The Survivors Club - The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life' and the president of ABC News, Ben Sherwood, explained that there are a number of steps that passengers need to pay attention to on Plus Three Minus Eight.

First, everyone on the plane cannot sleep. Use flat shoes when boarding the plane so you don't have trouble running to save yourself in an emergency.

Next, make sure that the seat belt is securely fastened and remains in the chair for that 11 minutes. Sherwood said all passengers were also not asked to relax and not be paranoid during this time.

Launching griffithinjurylaw, takeoffs and landings are very dangerous for passengers and cabin crew. Because it is likely that the accident occurred during the first and last few minutes of the flight leading up to landing.

Fatal Plane Accident

A study released by Boeing found that 48 percent of all fatal accidents worldwide between 2007 and 2016 occurred while the plane descended toward landing.

Although descent and landing processes represent only five percent of all flights, this moment is said to be the most dangerous time in commercial flight.

The second most dangerous flight stage is during takeoff and initial ascent. Even though it was only responsible for 13 percent of the incidents, it was during that phase that the plane was traveling rapidly near ground crew, other aircraft, and was upwind.

There are a lot of maneuvers that need to be done to get the aircraft to cruising altitude. Small mistakes can cause serious damage.

During takeoff and landing, there are a number of common causes of accidents. First, collisions with ground crews or vehicles not allowed to cross the runway.

Second, bad weather conditions can make it more difficult for pilots to control speed or maintain the plane's altitude when close to the ground.

Third, an aircraft crash can occur during taxiing or driving on the track, from poor visibility while descending, or if two aircraft are directed to the same runway during takeoff and landing.

On the other hand, there are a number of parties who can be held responsible for an accident, namely pilots, aircraft manufacturers, mechanics or maintenance crews, and traffic controllers.
