On June 13 2024, the Surabaya Integrated Science and Technology Institute (ISTTS) visited Petra 2 Christian High School Surabaya to conduct a workshop on the ITE Law "Ethics and AI Genes". This workshop is divided into 2 sessions. The 2 sessions discussed the same theme, namely around AI (Artificial Intelligence).
The first session, titled “Stay Resilient with AI,” was presented by Dr. Ir. Esther Irawati Setiawan, S.Kom, M.Kom. This session focused on how to use AI wisely and correctly in accordance with both written and unwritten ethics. Key points included avoiding the use of personal names, not using others' photos without permission due to privacy concerns, and similar considerations. Conversely, it is important to safeguard our own personal data to prevent misuse by others without our consent. This is crucial given that the advancement of technology has led to many instances where personal data has been misused, causing harm to individuals and their surroundings. After the first session, students were given a 30-minute break before moving on to the next session.
The second speaker was Dr. Yosi Kristian, S.Kom, M.Kom, Head of the Computer Science Department at ISTTS. He discussed the current capabilities of AI. He introduced the ITE Law (Information and Electronic Transactions Law), which is Law No. 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions. This law is the first in the field of Information Technology and Electronic Transactions and has set a precedent in regulating the use of Information Technology. One of the emerging technologies is AI (Artificial Intelligence). Dr. Yosi showed a graph indicating how long it took for various applications to reach 10 million users, with AI being at the top of the list, reaching this milestone in less than a year.
Despite the many benefits and ease of use of AI, the goal of the ITE Law “Ethics and Gen AI” is to ensure that AI is used wisely and correctly. AI can analyze statistical data efficiently, providing predictions and probabilities. It can also handle tasks such as generating text, translating languages, and even detecting and correcting errors. Additionally, AI can create illustrated stories in various formats, including illustrations, comics, and audio. Many AI websites, such as ChatGPT and Copilot, are available for students to explore. Students were invited to interact by answering statistical questions provided by Dr. Yosi and observing how AI creates illustrated stories and audio content.
Despite its capabilities, AI has limitations, challenges, and risks, such as high operational costs and excessive dependency. However, students were reassured that, no matter how advanced AI becomes, human decision-making remains irreplaceable. After the presentation, students had the opportunity to ask Dr. Yosi questions about AI, such as the number of devices needed, whether operational costs would remain high, and other related concerns.
Following the Q&A session, Dr. Yosi conducted a Kahoot quiz to test and review the material covered. Students were enthusiastic about answering the quiz questions, which consisted of 10 questions. The top three students received prizes from ISTTS. The workshop concluded with a group photo and a prayer. Through this workshop, the Institut Sains dan Teknologi Terpadu Surabaya (ISTTS) hopes that students will use AI technology wisely, without misuse or ethical violations.
